Spanish protesters cheer for ‘world revolution’ as demos banned

AFP
May 21, 2011

MADRID — Thousands of protesters in Madrid furious over soaring unemployment staged a silent protest and then erupted in cheers of joy as a 48-hour ban on their demonstration took effect on Saturday.

“Now we are all illegal” and “the people united will never be defeated,” were among the chants of the protesters who crammed Madrid’s Puerta del Sol square and spilled onto side streets.

The protesters held a minute’s silence, their hands in the air and some with tape over their mouths, just before midnight on Friday, when campaigning officially ended for Sunday’s regional and municipal elections.

The crowd then cheered as the clock in the square, the main site of New Year festivities in Madrid, chimed midnight and a ban on the protest became effective.

“From Tahrir to Madrid to the world, world revolution,” said one of the placards, referring to Tahrir Square in Cairo which was the focal point of the Egyptian revolution earlier this year.

Hedge Farm! Hedge Funds Buying Up Farms for Doomsday Food Price Scenario

Foster Kamer
New York Observer
May 21, 2011

On the rare occasion that New Yorkers talk about farming, it’s usually something along the lines of what sort of organic kale to plant in the vanity garden at the second house in the Adirondacks. But on a recent afternoon, The Observer had a conversation of a different sort about agricultural pursuits with a hedge fund manager he’d met at one of the many dark-paneled private clubs in midtown a few weeks prior. “A friend of mine is actually the largest owner of agricultural land in Uruguay,” said the hedge fund manager. “He’s a year older than I am. We’re somewhere [around] the 15th-largest farmers in America right now.”

“We,” as in, his hedge fund.

It may seem a little odd that in 2011 anyone’s thinking of putting money into assets that would have seemed attractive in 1911, but there’s something in the air-namely, fear. The hedge fund manager and others like him envision a doomsday scenario catalyzed by a weak dollar, higher-than-you-think inflation and an uncertain political climate here and abroad.

The pattern began to emerge sometime in 2008. “The Hedge Fund Manager Who Bought a Farm,” read the headline on one February 2008 Times of London piece detailing a British hedge fund manager’s attempt to play off the rising prices of grains in order to usurp local farmland. A Financial Times piece two months later began: “Hedge funds and investment banks are swapping their Gucci for gumboots.” It detailed BlackRock’s then-relatively new $420 million Agriculture Fund, which had already swept up 2,800 acres of land.

The Siege of Syria: US-funded unrest used to justify regime change

Perception management & US-funded unrest used to justify regime change.

Tony Cartalucci

May 21, 2011

Bangkok, Thailand – After admittedly organizing, training, funding, and equipping the very mobs littering Syria’s streets, many of whom have resorted to arson and armed clashes with Syrian security forces, the United States is pressuring the Syrian government to step down. The US does not expect a sovereign nation to stand-down in the face of openly foreign-funded sedition, rather it is simply using the resulting violence to justify wider intervention and the eventual seizure and despoiling of yet another Arab nation.

The coverage by the corporate-owned Western media exclusively relies on “activists inside and outside the country,” the London-based “Syrian Human Rights Monitoring Centre” which apparently has no web presence, the Damascus Center for Human Rights which boasts memberships with the National Endowment for Democracy and Tides Foundation-funded International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the Coalition for the International Criminal Court, funded by the European Union, the Ford Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Open Society Institute, the Sigrid Rausing Trust, and Humanity United.

A 15 minute video breaking down the contrived uprising in Egypt. Examining what is now known about Egypt and comparing it to information emerging regarding Syria, we see identical operations unfolding. The only difference is Syria’s Assad and his determination not to give in to foreign-funded sedition and ochlocracy.
….

Humanity United in turn boast partnerships with the BBC World Service Trust, NED/Open Society/US State Department-funded Benetech, the Open Society Institute, and the NED-funded Solidarity Center which mobilized Egypt’s labor unions just as the US-stoked unrest began to falter. In other words, every organization involved interlocks with the vast corporate/foundation-funded imperial network masquerading as individual “human rights organizations” and benign NGOs. In reality this “civil society” network seeks to supplant national governments, and interface with global “institutions” like the IMF, World Bank, and the UN, all of which have been contrived by corporate-financier oligarchs. It is a modern day empire in the making.

These so-called “human rights activists” are entirely funded by, and predominantly based in London and Washington. It would be an understatement to say the “Syrian opposition” has the backing of the very corporations that have been striving for regime change in Syria for at least two decades. These are the same corporations and foundations behind the various think-tanks that are the true architects of Western foreign policy. It should be no surprise then that these “activists,” or more accurately, these “agents” behind the Syrian unrest are providing the precise narrative and pretext required to implement increased Western involvement toward the goal of regime change, at the expense of many unwitting, well intentioned people’s lives.

Dubious Reporting

NED-funded Reporters Without Borders recently compiled a list of “Journalists targeted by governments desperate to control news,” which included Syria, citing the mysterious London-based Syrian Human Rights Monitoring Centre, while the Soros/Ford Foundation-funded Human Rights Watch cited the above mentioned Damascus Center for Human Rights regarding “alleged deaths.” And it is these “activists” that are cited by not only by globalist-funded organizations but also the majority of the corporate-owned media, where each sentence is punctuated by “activists say,” or the very groups above are mentioned by name.

The Vancouver Sun reports, “According to Syrian activists, at least 700 civilians have died in two months of clashes between government forces and protesters. Syrian authorities dispute this, blaming armed groups instead.”

The Wall Street Journal reports, “”It’s symbolic, but it’s important because it’s the first time the U.S. targets the political arm of the regime,” said Radwan Ziadeh, a Washington-based Syrian opposition activist and director of the Damascus Center for Human Rights Studies.” The Wall Street Journal would cite the center against as well as the FIDH, reporting that, “the International Federation for Human Rights and the Damascus Center for Human Rights Studies said on Wednesday that Deraa residents had told them that villagers digging in farmland on the city’s outskirts found 13 bodies, including women and children. Deraa, the southern cradle of Syria’s protests, was under military siege for at least 11 days.”

The Boston Globe reports, “Activists said security forces killed at least 26 people and wounded hundreds.” Boston Globe continues with astonishing disinformation claiming, “Wissam Tarif, executive director of Insan, a Syrian human rights group, said he had interviewed young men tortured just days ago. One of them, who had his fingernails pulled out, had taken a lead in the protests yesterday in Baniyas.” It turns out “Insan” is based in Spain, not Syria and considers itself an “international non-governmental organization.” Such information however undermines the overall narrative and it appears that the Boston Globe has no problem hammering reality into a shape more to its pleasing.

The London Guardian notes within a recent article the difficulty of verifying reports, citing a Human Rights Watch “researcher” monitoring Syria from Beirut, Lebanon who said, “We are receiving second hand information from Deraa that is quite worrying about bodies on the ground, more than 30 people killed over the last two days, campaigns of arrests, but we are not able to confirm that.”

This second hand information derived from dubious or entirely discredited sources has been ceaselessly conveyed by the corporate media to the impressionable audiences of the West and used as the foundation for sanctions, rhetoric, and threats of wider Libyan-style intervention against Syria. It should be noted that similar second hand, unverified information derived from similar US-funded opposition groups served as the foundation for the current war of aggression being waged against Libya.

Syrian unrest is admittedly US-funded

Syria has been slated for regime change since as early as 1991. In 2002, then US Under Secretary of State John Bolton, would add Syria to the growing “Axis of Evil.” It would be later revealed that Bolton’s threats against Syria would manifest themselves as covert funding and support for opposition groups inside of Syria spanning both the Bush and Obama administrations.

In a recent CNN article, acting State Department spokesman Mark Toner stated, “We’re not working to undermine that [Syrian] government. What we are trying to do in Syria, through our civil society support, is to build the kind of democratic institutions, frankly, that we’re trying to do in countries around the globe. What’s different, I think, in this situation is that the Syrian government perceives this kind of assistance as a threat to its control over the Syrian people.”

Toner’s remarks come after the Washington Post released cables indicating the US has been funding Syrian opposition groups since at least 2005 under the Bush administration and was continued under Obama. As we can see, the campaign against Syria transcended presidential administrations for nearly two decades.

In a recent AFP report, Michael Posner, the assistant US Secretary of State for Human Rights and Labor, stated that the “US government has budgeted $50 million in the last two years to develop new technologies to help activists protect themselves from arrest and prosecution by authoritarian governments.” The report went on to explain that the US “organized training sessions for 5,000 activists in different parts of the world. A session held in the Middle East about six weeks ago gathered activists from Tunisia, Egypt, Syria and Lebanon who returned to their countries with the aim of training their colleagues there.” Posner would add, “They went back and there’s a ripple effect.” That ripple effect of course is the “Arab Spring” we are now expected to believe was entirely spontaneous and indigenous.

Conclusion

As we can see, no matter what the Syrian government is really doing, our perception of what is transpiring in Syria is being filtered through a propaganda network bent on the foregone conclusion of regime change and the subsequent reordering of the nation. The level of duplicity has reached a crescendo with presidential speeches still claiming before the American people that “it was the people themselves who launched these movements, and must determine their outcome.” Such claims are being made even as public statements by the US State Department and a myriad of reports have openly admit to training and equipping thousands of protest leaders before sending them to their home countries to start a “ripple effect.”

It is important to understand that it is not lying puppet presidents like George Bush or Barack Obama that are to blame, but rather the corporate-financier interests who are conspiring and funding these global gambits and building this nefarious “civil society” network to supplant national sovereignty worldwide. Once this is understood, we must begin to undermine the very source of their power – that being our own complicity, our continual patronization of their corporations, their monetary system, our continual respect and obedience to their contrived, extra-Constitutional laws, and our continual participation in their system. We can do this by not participating in their strategy of global tension and instead, pursue our own agenda and build our own system, locally, self-sufficiently, and independently.

Fukushima Ocean Contamination: Worse Than Chernobyl

But so-called “environmentalists” are more concerned about carbon taxes

Fukushima Ocean Contamination: Worse Than Chernobyl 200511top2

Paul Joseph Watson
Infowars.com
Friday, May 20, 2011

Scientists have discovered that the radioactive impact on surrounding oceans from the Fukushima nuclear disaster has already outstripped the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, meaning that the figure of nearly a million cancer deaths as a result of Chernobyl is set to be replicated over the coming decades.

When nuclear experts like Dr. Christopher Busby and Arnie Gundersen were warning that Fukushima could become “Chernobyl on steroids” in the early days and weeks of the disaster they were called alarmists by many sectors of the mainstream media.

However, within just two weeks of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami that crippled the nuclear plant, the amount of radiation released from the facility already rivaled that of Chernobyl, the worst nuclear disaster up until that point.

Now new research conducted by Ken Buesseler, a chemical oceanographer with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, illustrates how Fukushima, which has already been dispensed with as a news story by the corporate media despite the crisis only escalating, has surpassed Chernobyl in its negative impact on the nearby seas and oceans

“When it comes to the oceans,”the impact of Fukushima exceeds Chernobyl,” said Buesseler.

“Levels of some radionuclides are at least an order of magnitude higher than the highest levels in 1986 in the Baltic and Black Seas, the two ocean water bodies closest to Chernobyl,” he added.

Buesseler has been awarded a rapid-response grant from the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Division of Ocean Sciences to study the oceanic data, a vital task given the fact that the EPA responded to the crisis by raising the safe radiation limit and figuratively putting its fingers in its ears.

Despite the fact that Fukushima has devastated the environment in a myriad of different ways, in addition to the fact that the long term impact won’t be known for years, self-proclaimed environmentalists like George Monbiot have revealed themselves as wolves in sheep’s clothing by completely dismissing the importance of Fukushima amidst their zeal to hype global warming and carbon taxes.

Even as the Fukushima crisis reached its height, Monbiot wrote a series of articles in the Guardian not only downplaying the severity of the situation, but brazenly proclaiming that Fukushima had made him “stop worrying and love nuclear power.”

Monbiot slammed those concerned about Fukushima for having “wildly exaggerated the dangers of radioactive pollution,” strange talk for a supposed environmentalist but unsurprising given that Monbiot is part of an elite that is hell bent on exploiting manufactured fears about global warming to push through a “planned-opolis” prison society wherein every single human activity will be tightly regulated and licensed by the state. In Monbiot’s world view, an environmental crisis only exists when it can be plundered for power and control.

“I have to say that I know George Monbiot and he doesn’t know anything,” Dr. Christopher Busby responded, adding that Monbiot’s claims were “total nonsense,” “tosh,” and that it was “criminally irresponsible for him to write what he writes given that he doesn’t know anything.”

The news that radionuclides now released from Fukushima have already had a bigger impact on surrounding oceans than Chernobyl counts as more egg on Monbiot’s face, but the real consequences for sea life and the wider threat to human health will only become clearer as cancers accelerate in the coming years.

Despite UN and World Health Organization studies that claim Chernobyl led to a maximum of 9,000 deaths and 200,000 cases of radiation sickness, more contemporary studies have shown that nearly a million people have been killed from cancers caused by the disaster over the course of the last 25 years.

The corporate media and faux environmentalists like Monbiot will continue to poo-poo Fukushima, but when people start dropping dead from an explosion of cancers over the next 30 years, it will be yet another reminder that burying your head in the sand is not a good way to prevent nuclear contamination.

Strauss-Kahn: The Establishment Eliminates A Threat

Paul Craig Roberts
Infowars.com
May 20, 2011

The police and the prostitute media have made it impossible for Dominique Strauss-Kahn to get a fair trial. From the moment of the announcement that he had been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a hotel maid, and before he was ever indicted, the accounts given by the police were designed to create the impression that the director of the International Monetary Fund was guilty. For example, the police told the media, which duly regurgitated to the public, that Strauss-Kahn was in such a hurry to flee the scene of the crime that he left behind his cell phone. The police also put out the story that by calling airlines and demanding passenger lists, they managed to catch the fleeing rapist just as his plane was departing for France.

A New York judge denied Strauss-Kahn bail on the basis of police misrepresentation that he was apprehended fleeing the country.

Once he was imprisoned, the police announced that Strauss-Kahn was on suicide watch, which is a way of suggesting to the public that the accused rapist might take his own life in order to avoid the public humiliation of a guilty verdict from a jury.

But what really happened, assuming one can learn anything from press reports, is that Strauss-Kahn, upon arriving at JFK airport for his scheduled flight, discovered that he did not have his cell phone and telephoned the hotel, the scene of the alleged crime. It boggles the mind that anyone could possibly think that a person fleeing from his crime would call the scene of the crime, ask about his left behind cell phone, and tell them where he was.

Then in rapid succession, reeking of orchestration, a French woman steps forward and declares that a decade ago she was nearly raped by Strauss-Kahn. This was followed by Kristin Davis, the Manhattan Madam of the prostitute who did in Eliot Spitzer before he could get the banksters on Wall Street, stepping forward to announce that one of her call girls refused to service Strauss-Kahn a second time because he was too rough in the act.

With hunting season opened, any woman whose career would benefit from publicity, or whose bank account would bless a damage award, can now step forward and claim to have been a victim or near victim of Strauss-Kahn.

This is not to deny that Strauss-Kahn might have an inordinate appetite for sex that did him in. It is to say that long before a jury hears from the maid, or from a prosecutor speaking for the maid “who is too traumatized to appear in court,” the jury has been programmed with the verdict that he is guilty.

Why would he run away if he didn’t do it?

Look at all the women he has accosted!

You get the picture.

I have written about the anomalies of the case. One of the most striking is the confirmed reports in the French and British press that a political activist for French President Sarkozy, Jonathan Pinet, tweeted the news of Strauss-Kahn’s arrest to Arnaud Dassier, a spin doctor for Sarkozy, before the news was announced by the New York police.

Pinet’s explanation for how he was the first to know is that a “friend” in the Sofitel Hotel, where the alleged crime took place, told him. Is it merely a coincidence that the men assigned the task of removing the Strauss-Kahn threat to French President Sarkozy’s re-election had a clued-in friend in the Sofitel Hotel? Did the police clue-in the “friend” before they made the public announcement? If so, why?

What bothers me about the Strauss-Kahn affair is that if the police have evidence that supports their insistence on his guilt, it is pointless for the police to set Strauss-Kahn up in the media. Generally, set-ups like this occur only when there is no evidence or when the evidence has to be fabricated and cannot withstand examination.

  • A d v e r t i s e m e n t
  • Buy 3 Get 1 FREE!

As a person who had a Washington career, I find other aspects of the case disturbing. Strauss-Kahn had emerged as a threat to the establishment. Polls showed that as the socialist candidate, he was the odds-on favorite to defeat the American candidate, Sarkozy, in the upcoming French presidential election. Perhaps it was only electoral posturing to help defeat Sarkozy, but Strauss-Kahn indicated that he intended to move the International Monetary Fund away from its past policy of making the poor pay for the mistakes of the rich. He spoke of strengthening collective bargaining, and of restructuring mortgages, tax and spending policies in order that the economy would serve ordinary people in addition to the banksters. Strauss-Kahn said that regulation needed to be restored to financial markets and implied that a more even distribution of income was required.

These remarks, together with a likely win over Sarkozy in the French election, made Strauss-Kahn a double-barreled challenge to the establishment. The third strike against him was the recent IMF report that said China would surpass the US as the world’s first economy within five years. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/imf-bombshell-age-of-america-about-to-end-2011-04-25

People who haven’t spent their professional life in Washington may not understand the threat to Washington that is in the IMF report. Whether deserved or not, the IMF has a lot of credibility. By placing China as the number one economic power by the end of the next US presidential term, the IMF thrust a dagger through the heart of American hegemony. Washington’s power is based on America’s economic supremacy. The IMF report said that this supremacy was at its end.

This kind of announcement tells the political world that, as the headline read, “the age of America is over.” For the first time in decades, other countries can see the prospect of escaping from US domination. They don’t have to be puppet states, part of the hegemonic empire. They see the prospect of serving their own people and their own interests instead of those of Washington. European countries, for example, forced to fight for Washington in Afghanistan and Libya, see light at the end of the tunnel. They can now think about refusing.

Although rich and a member of the establishment, and independently of his behavior toward women, Strauss-Kahn made the mistake of revealing that he might have a social conscience. Either this social conscience or the hubris of power led him to challenge American supremacy. This is an unforgivable crime for which he is being punished.

My friend, Alexander Cockburn, an intelligent and civilized person who is derided by right-wingers as a communist, lacks my experience of Washington. Consequently, he thinks that the facts will come out, although he seems to prefer that they come out on the side of the maid and not Strauss-Kahn.

If Alex were the Bolshevik he is said to be, he would know that no high-ranking figure who was serving the establishment would be destroyed on the basis of the word of an immigrant maid living in a sub-let apartment in a building for aids victims. The very notion that the US establishment craves justice to this extent is a total absurdity. Americans are so indifferent to injustice that the American public shrugs off the hundreds of thousands and millions of women, children, and village elders who are murdered, maimed, dispossessed, and displaced by the US military in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Libya, Somalia, and wherever Washington and the military/security complex, while feeding on power and profit, can claim to be protecting Americans from “terrorists” or bringing democracy to the heathen.

The American criminal justice system is riddled with wrongful convictions and stinks of injustice. The US has a much higher rate of incarceration than alleged authoritarian regimes, such as China, and routinely destroys the lives of young people, and even mothers of small children, for using drugs.

Strauss-Kahn’s indictment serves emotional needs of conservatives, left-wingers, and feminists as well as establishment agendas. Conservatives don’t like the French, because they did not support the US invasion of Iraq. The left-wing doesn’t like rich white guys and IMF officials, and feminists don’t like womanizers. But even if the government’s case falls apart in the courtroom, Strauss-Kahn has been removed from the French presidential race and from the IMF. This, not justice for an immigrant, is what the case is about.

Many Americans are unable to comprehend that authorities would remove a threat with a frame-up. But far worst has occurred. Francesco Cossiga, a former President of Italy, revealed that many of the bombings in Europe during the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, which were blamed on communists, were in fact “false flag” operations carried out by the CIA and Italian intelligence in order to scare voters away from the communist party. Cossiga’s revelations resulted in a parliamentary investigation in which intelligence operative Vincenzo Vinciguerra stated: “You had to attack civilians, the people, women, children, innocent people, unknown people far removed from any political game. The reason was quite simple: to force the public to turn to the state to ask for greater security.”

If democratic governments will murder innocents for political reasons, why wouldn’t they frame someone? Whether innocent or guilty, Strauss-Kahn has been framed in advance of his trial.
